AL CAPONE'S CUSTOM DESIGNED ARMORED 1930 CADILLAC MODEL 452 FLEETWOOD V-16 - 1/4 INCH ARMOR PLATE
In 1928, Al Capone ordered 2 custom designed armored autos. One a Cadillac V8 Model 341 Town Sedan and the other a 1930 Cadillac V16 Model 452 Imperial Sedan.
These cars are the first in the history of the automobile passenger cars with hidden defense items.
Speficially, in the first VIP-armored car "Cadillac" model 341:
- Redesigned armored body panels and bulletproof glass
- Flip-down rear window for the convenience of shooting at pursuers
- Police paint in black and green, as the Chicago police cars of the era
Features of the second VIP-armored car "Cadillac" model 452:
- Armor as thick as a quarter inch (6.35 mm) and 5-layer armored windows.
- The side windows on the rear doors were equipped with small slits, lockable from inside armored hatches, from which it was possible to fire handguns or automatic weapons.
- Ability to discharge oil onto the exhaust pipes to establish a smokescreen in front of the pursuers
- Hatch in the floor through which the road was accesable where special sharpened spikes could be tossed to pierce all the pursuing car tires
In December of 1941 after Japanese air attack on Pearl Harbor, the armored Cadillac, Al Capones model 341 that was confiscated from the gangster in 1931 was put back into service. The U.S. government used it for the protection of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt for trips to the White House.
In 2006, the armored Cadillac Model 341 was sold at auction RM-Auctions - Vintage Motor Cars in Arizona for $ 621,500.
In 2009, the armored Cadillac Model 452 was sold at auction Bonhams Auction for $ 309,500.
